Having Camping Traditions

When I was young, there were things we would do every time we went camping and that made for fond memories as I grew up. It also gave me experiences to pass along to my own children when we would camp as a family and I hope they have the same special memories tucked away to share with their own children someday. I will share some of our favorites with you in the even that you are new to this beautiful new world of camping!

Upon arrival to our campsite, we all work together to set up camp the way we like it and then celebrate being out in the wild together with the usual hotdog roast! Now, some may say, I camp in an RV so I can cook in a kitchen . But I am here to tell you that for as nice as it is to have that luxury all the time, the first night there cannot be beat by hunting for your willow stick, whittling it into a point (with mom and dad s help, of course), and cooking your own dog over the campfire. Sure, buns and condiments are great too! But there were many times I just ate mine right off the stick, the taste of the campfire and my hard work there in my hands.

I think that a campfire is a pretty staple happening for all campers, even those who have RVs. And unless there is a ban on them, they pop up everywhere and hold a sort of sentimental quality in many sites. The S more is probably the most popular of all campfire traditions and certainly the messiest! But they do taste oh so very yummy. Using your nicely whittled willow stick, roast a lovely golden brown marshmallow over the coals, the flames will only ignite your poor mallow, and sandwich it between two squares of graham cracker and some chocolate when it is nice and gooey. Chow down! Remember, wet wipes make great clean up tools for hands and faces.

One of my best kept secrets is to go sparkin . I learned this as a young teen with my friends and now use it with my kids when we camp. Very few people know that if you chomp down on a wintergreen Lifesaver, it creates a spark in your mouth. Go ahead, try it! See? I told you! We will take a bag of them and wait until it gets dark outside and then sit around crunching Lifesavers, keeping our mouths open as much as we can and taking in the light show. We laugh and laugh until our tummies can t take any more wintergreen!

Camping is a time to enjoy nature, to bond with each other, to instill traditions that can be handed down in your family as your children grow. It can also be a time for you, as a parent, to step back and watch your child blossom before your eyes. Traditions are not just for the holidays, they are for all the days!
